‘The Horizon of Pentecostal Hermeneutics’
Dr Wolfgang Vondey
Professor of Christian Theology and Pentecostal Studies at the University of Birmingham

Dr Vondey was born and raised in Germany completing his higher education and degree in Japanese Studies, Japanese Linguistics, and Media Science at Philipps University, Marburg. During the 1990s he lived in Tokyo, studying at Keio University, and in Okinawa, as Coordinator for International Relations, until moving to the United States in 1996 to begin theological studies. He graduated from the Pentecostal Theological Seminary (Cleveland, TN) in 1999 and received a PhD in systematic theology and ethics from Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI) in 2003. Following a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Boston College, he joined the Regent University Divinity School in 2005. He founded and directed the Regent Centre for Renewal Studies from 2009-2015, and became associate professor in 2010 and was awarded a Chair in 2015. He is a member of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, the American Academy of Religion, and has conducted several large-scale conferences on interdisciplinary themes with relation to Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies. He is also the founding chair of the ecumenical studies group of the Society for Pentecostal Studies.

Dr John Goldingay
David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Fuller Theological Seminary

Dr. John Goldingay is the David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Fuller Theological Seminary and served as Priest-in-Charge of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Pasadena, California. He studied theology at the University of Oxford, holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham, and was awarded a Doctor of Divinity (DD) by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth. He is a prolific scholar of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. Dr. Goldingay has published extensively in the leading commentary series including the Word Biblical Commentary, International Critical Commentary (ICC), and New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT). His work spans a wide range of Old Testament texts and themes.

The lecture took place on Wednesday 22 October 2025 at 3.30–5.00pm (GMT)

As Regents Theological College celebrates it’s 100th anniversary this year, we felt it would be fitting to invite someone connected to Regents’ history to mark the occasion. 

Former Regents principal William Atkinson will speak on ‘Forty Years at Bible College: Reflections and Recommendations’, drawing on his experiences at Elim Bible College and Regents Theological College, the International Bible Institute of London, London Bible College, London School of Theology, and the European Pentecostal Theological Association, offering insights and lessons learned over his journey in theological education.

Andrew T. Lincoln is Emeritus Professor of New Testament at the University of Gloucestershire. “Charismatic Renewal and Pentecostalism: Entanglements and Transformations”.

The lecture took place in January at the Elim Arts Centre in West Malvern.

This lecture explored the significant, fascinating, and often surprising interpenetrations between the charismatic renewal and Pentecostalism between 1945 and 1980. Drawing on case studies of Pentecostal and charismatic interactions in North America, the British Isles, South Africa, and Australasia — and with extensive reference to the Fountain Trust archives in the Donald Gee Centre at Regents Theological College — the lecture explained the development of a complex relationship. In seeking to understand these developments in their cultural contexts, in particular, of the “long” 1960s, it was argued that history is necessary to make sense of the contours of global Christianity today. 

Dr John Maiden is Head of Department and Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies at The Open University, in the United Kingdom. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, as well as the Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion, he researches charismatic and evangelical movements. He is author of Age of the Spirit: Charismatic Renewal, the Anglo-World and Global Christianity, 1945-1980 (Oxford University Press) and co-editor of Transatlantic Charismatic Renewal, 1950-2000 (Brill).
